Broomhill Birder

Hi everyone,

managing to get out now and a trip was on the cards for Gibralter Point in Lincolnshire on Wednesday 13th January and the usual sightings for the local area from Mr Whitehouse.

15th January.

A good start to the day with two Little Egret , briefly in the dyke across from the Old Moor Tavern, before flying off towards Old Moor Rspb.

50% ice cover made the waterbird count straightforward but accurately assessing the numbers of Golden Plover and Lapwing was difficult due to these two species foraging widely over the Ings. Present were 2 Mute Swan, 64 Canada Geese, 1 Greylag, 32 Wigeon, 18 Mallard, 7 Teal, 2 Tufted Duck, 1m+1f Pochard, 2 Goosander, 1 Cormorant, 3 Grey Heron, 1 Little Egret, 15 Coot, 1 Moorhen, 125+ Golden Plover, 117+ Lapwing, 1 Ruff, 1 Kestrel, 116 BH Gull, 2 Common Gull and a flock of 19 Pied Wagtail feeding directly in front of the hide.

Good start (on the first really cold day of winter) with a Goldcrest being the first bird seen on Highgate . The path is getting worse due to ‘poaching’ by horses, particularly around the hide. A really cold start to the day with a biting wind that even went through gloves but in to the afternoon although still cold the wind eased quite a bit. While at Gibralter Point we saw:-
